Oil slick hair color is the hair trend brunette babes have been waiting for. Super-visible rainbow hair in shades of violet, green, and blue? Yeah, sign us up.

But what if you want to experiment with bright hair colors without bleaching the shit out of your lovely locks and spending hundreds of dollars at a salon? Is there a way to get temporary rainbow hair?

Yes. Yes, there is. And the secret is drugstore cream eye shadow.

That's right. You can get this amazing mermaid hair for under $15 — and I'm going to show you how. Here's how to use eye shadow to get rainbow hair.

Our fearless fashion reporter Jessica Torres volunteered to be my hair model-slash-guinea pig.

She has the most gorgeous dark hair, and was excited to release her inner merbabe.

Here are the products I used:

This is a 100% drugstore joint. The shadows: Maybelline Color Tattoo Eyeshadows ($5.60, Drugstore.com) in Edgy Emerald, Tenacious Teal, and Painted Purple. I am IN LOVE with these; not only do they show up incredibly well on dark hair, they also add a little sparkle — and they last until you wash them out. Seriously.

The brush: Revlon's brand new concealer brush, which is AMAZING, and will be out soon.

This process is really simple: curl or straighten your hair, then paint the eye shadow on small sections.

You can start as close to the scalp as you like; I kept the color about a quarter of the way down and at the ends for an awesome ombre look.

Paint multiple shades into each strand if you like; it looks cool as hell!

This green-to-purple fade is my favorite.

Let the eye shadow set, and once it's dry, comb gently through it with a clean spoolie brush.

This will break up any clumps and stiffness without brushing out the color and sparkle.

The finished look is BEYOND STUNNING.

Forty minutes later, the oil slick hair is done! The color shows up beautifully on Jess' dark hair, and the positioning of each highlight makes it look like she legit spent $700 at a salon.

The best part? These colors will stay exactly this vibrant all day.

In my tests, I noticed some very light color fading after nine hours — so you can remain a mermaid all day (or night).

And getting it out could NOT be easier.

And when you're done living your best oil-slick hair color life, you don't have to dye over it! Brushing it out will remove about 80% of the color, or wash it out with regular shampoo. No staining, no fuss. It honestly couldn't be easier.
