Growing up, there weren't many positive examples of women and girls wearing their natural hair. I always thought that straight hair was pretty hair. And for just about any special occasion, I headed to the hairstylist to get my hair silked out. However, these days, the celebration of curls has increased, and representation has grown, particularly in movies and television.

The short film Hair Love is an example of that. And now it's being rewarded in a major way.

In August, Angry Birds 2 viewers got a little treat.

Ahead of the film, the short Hair Love, a story of a father doing his daughter's hair for the first time, captured hearts. The film, which also celebrated curls and textured hair, has been celebrated far and wide since, and was adapted into a book for young girls and their dads.

And now the powerful short has been nominated for an Oscar.

The announcement came this morning as the list of nominees rolled in. The reaction has been one of immense support as the film is trending nationally on Twitter. "#HairLove has been nominated for the Oscar for Animated Short! Congrats, @MatthewACherry!" a fan tweeted congratulating the film and its director, Matthew Cherry.

It's particularly special for those who have watched the film from its inception.

"We were all on here watching @MatthewACherry give daily updates on the 'hair love' kickstarter and then the animation process and now it's nominated for an oscar oh my god," an adoring viewer tweeted about the movie.

Cherry is also making history.

The former NFL star turned movie director is only one of two former professional athletes to be nominated for such an award. "So ⁦@MatthewACherry becomes the second former professional athlete — after ⁦ @kobebryant — to be nominated for an Oscar. In the same category too. Congrats Matt," a tweet read that spoke of him and his predecessor.

Looks like Cherry has been manifesting this.

In 2012, Cherry manifested that he would win an Oscar. And now, more than seven years later, it looks like that dream is coming true. "You gotta believe!" he said to his fans.

We'll be tuning in to see if it takes home the crown!
