I'll never forget my first bad breakup. I was 17 years old, headed into my senior year of high school, and feeling like the entire universe was crumbling around me. I went through so many emotions: anger, sadness, the need to rebel, you name it. One night, emotions at an all-time high, I made the impulsive decision to get a belly button piercing. And while in hindsight it really wasn't a big deal, in the moment, it was a giant "screw you" to the boy who broke my heart. Surprisingly enough, for every single heartbreak after that, I've gotten a piercing immediately following. The act has become therapeutic for me, and in my own crazy way, a representation of a fresh start.

For most women, however, breakup coping comes in the form of changing their hair, and fans are speculating that that's exactly what Miley Cyrus just did. Check out why ahead.

For the past week, we've been tuned into Miley Cyrus' Instagram.

Her recent split from actor husband Liam Hemsworth has been the talk of celebrity gossip since the pair announced that they would be going their separate ways. And though Cyrus has played mum on the topic (aside from that brief Instagram tiff with Brody Jenner) earlier this week, she posted three images with captions that appeared to be geared toward her soon-to-be ex.

Fans also noticed that along with the emotionally-charged captions, Cyrus was donning visibly lighter hair.

"Don’t fight evolution, because you will never win. Like the mountain I am standing on top of, which was once under water, connected with Africa, change is inevitable. The Dolomites were not created overnight, it was over millions of years that this magnificent beauty was formed. My dad always told me, 'Nature never hurries but it is always on time'.... it fills my heart with peace and hope KNOWING that is true. I was taught to respect the planet and its process and I am committed to doing the same with my own," she wrote with bleached, almost white tousled waves tucked under a baseball cap.

The color change had many fans thinking that it was a move triggered by her recent split.

In the words of the esteemed Coco Chanel: "A woman who changes her hair is about to change her life," and considering Cyrus has been going through some pretty drastic life-altering moments, the possibility seemed pretty understandable.

However, that's not the case, and her longtime hairstylist just confirmed it.

In an interview with Refinery29, celeb stylist Justin Anderson said the switch-up is for something much different. "We wanted to change it up a bit for her new music coming out," he said. "We decided to brighten it up and took it much lighter."

Anderson is also the stylist responsible for the return of Cyrus' beloved Hannah Montana shag.

However, the news hasn't stopped fans from predicting more drastic hair transformations on the horizon.

"Miley cyrus and Liam separated so prepare for her to cut her hair and swing on a wrecking ball naked again," one fan tweeted about the last time the duo split and Cyrus revealed that infamous rocker 'do.

And speaking of her short cut...

The color change comes at the same time of the anniversary of that massive chop that left us all floored and amazed. "Do you know what’s happening today? 7 years ago today @MileyCyrus cut her hair!" a Cyrus fan page tweeted.

So what else does she have in store for us?

Is this a hint that wild Miley is making her return? "Anyway... I’m hoping @MileyCyrus chops her hair off and goes on tour to do She Is Coming and Bangerz bc I will throw $$$$ on it and her," a fan of the more rebellious Cyrus noted.

Whatever the real reason may be, we'll be watching closely for more Miley updates.
