plus size hashtag

Growing up plus-size, I learned how to dress for the comfort of others.

My high school years were filled with angst as I did everything I could to hide my body. I made sure to cover my arms, thighs, belly, and double chin. My desire to blend in far outweighed any inkling of personal style.

So many women have had (and are still having) this same experience. We're told to "flatter our figures" and avoid two-piece swimsuits, crop tops, bold prints, horizontal stripes... the list goes on.

One of the things that helped me to learn to love my body is the support from other women and friends on social media. Hashtags like #effyourbeautystandards and #goldenconfidence showed me a whole new world.

Now there's a new and amazing hashtag that's spreading like wildfire and motivating women to dress however they damn well please. #WeWearWhatWeWant

Model and blogger Simone Mariposa started #WeWearWhatWeWant to encourage plus-size women to wear clothes that most say are not for curvy women.

It all started with a tweet. "I saw a story on my timeline about a plus-size woman who was judged for wearing a 'not so normal' outfit," Mariposa told Revelist.

"So many plus-size women have been through that, so I wanted to create a safe haven for women who loved making daring fashion choices, and being proud of the skin they're in."

Mariposa had no idea the hashtag would grow so quickly. "My main goal was to help women own their bodies and their curves, and not hide and conform to what society says, or what people think."

At the time of this writing, the hashtag has over 1,300 Instagram submissions and 1,000 Facebook mentions. Mariposa's original tweet has been retweeted over 140 times.

Part of its popularity is through support from plus-size bloggers like Callie Thorpe and Gracie Francesca.

"When I look in the mirror and the only one there is me, every freckle on my face is where it's suppose to be. And I know my creator didn't make no mistakes on me. My feet, my thighs, my lips, my eyes. I'm loving what I see. #WeWearWhatWeWant," wrote Francesca.

The words in the tag bring out the carefree, powerful woman in all of us; the one that doesn't think twice about shimmying into a skin-tight dress.

Pictures of women letting go of their fears and showing off their "rolls" showed up on Mariposa's timeline.

They were showing off their full bellies.

Thick thighs were out and about, too.

One follower even uploaded pictures she once took down due to cyber bullying.

"It isn't about what society thinks. It isn't about promoting obesity. It's about feeling comfortable the way we are, and not letting other people's comfort with themselves dictate how we, as fat women, live our lives," said Mariposa.
