Ariel Winter seems to be coming out on top of a lifetime of body-shaming and unnecessary body scrutiny. It started at home with the Modern Family star's mother, and then public trolls were happy to take on the torch of making awful comments about Winter's body when she was as young as 11.
Winter has fearlessly engaged with the public conversation about her body. Although she must be so tired. Yesterday, after posting an innocuous photo of herself, another troll decided to pile on accusations of drug-fueled weight loss.
When Winter proudly sported scars from her breast reduction at the SAG Awards in 2016, her mother, Crystal Workman, expressed disapproval.
“I don't think anyone at that age should be cutting into their breasts," Workman told Inside Edition. "I am surprised she did it so young and that the doctor did it for her so young ... I'm sorry, I just think this is inappropriate. She should never be embarrassed of her scars, but she shouldn't be flaunting them.”
Winter, who alleged abuse in court documents, eventually emancipated from her mother. Sadly, Winter also claimed her mother sexualized her body since she was 7 years old.
"The smallest miniskirts, sailor suits, low-cut things, the shortest dresses you've ever seen. People thought I was 24 when I was 12. If there was going to be a nude scene when I was that age, my mother would have a thousand percent said yes," Winter told the Hollywood Reporter.
All of this is relevant to today's troll, because Winter's body — like most women's bodies — seems to have been under intense scrutiny since she was a small child. After being cast in her breakthrough role on Modern Family at 10 years old, the comments began as soon she hit puberty. "It was automatically 'You're a fat slut.' 'You're a whore,' " she told Hollywood Reporter.
Yesterday, Winter posted a rather innocuous photo and some people took this as an opportunity to be nasty.
Winter is 20 years old, and someone in her comments made a playful joke about "underage drinking." The actress clarified that she was just holding the drink.

Can 2019 be the year we let women live?
