Apparently the Riverdale set is a place where romance blooms.

It's no secret that Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse have been an item for a while now, but Camila Mendes and Charles Melton are another IRL couple who met while filming The CW show. Both duos tend to keep a pretty low profile, and they don't talk about their relationships in public all that often.

In a new interview with LA Confidential, Mendes dives into her upbringing, her breakthrough as an actress, and the runaway success of Riverdale. She's less forthcoming, however, about her boyfriend, though she did explain why she isn't a fan of discussing her dating life.

Camila Mendes knows how to tell it like it is.

The Riverdale star once told off a fan who criticized her romantic relationships. The person in question had shared a photo comparing Mendes in her relationship with boyfriend and costar Charles Melton to her previous relationship with ex Victor Houston. According to the fan, Mendes looked "happier" with Houston, but she quickly set the record straight.

In a new interview with LA Confidential, she covered just about everything, including why she struggled with certain college courses.

Mendes touched on her upbringing and attending New York University's prestigious Tisch School of the Arts. She got off to a bumpy start at NYU: "I was doing well in my academic classes, but I wasn't doing well in my theater classes because I wasn't going," she told the publication. "I would be hungover and skip class."

Apparently one of her professors gave her a major reality check.

"My teacher yelled at me in front of everyone," she told LA Confidential. "He was like, 'It's such a shame to see you waste your talent. You need to stop making you more important than your work. Make your work more important than you.'" That advice struck a chord with Mendes, who turned it all around and, well, the rest is history.

While she was cool talking about her college days, she was less interested in discussing her relationship with Melton.

Mendes and Melton — can we officially dub them "M&M?" — have been dating offscreen for a few months at this point. As you probably know, they play Veronica and Reggie respectively on Riverdale. On the current season of the show, their characters are embarking on a romance of their own. They shared their first onscreen kiss back in January, which had fans everywhere talking.

The duo was first rumored to be a ~thing~ back in September 2018.

They were spotted getting nice and cozy on a boat over Labor Day weekend. Not too long after, some sleuthing fans noticed that Melton was all over Mendes' Instagram, even liking comments on her posts about her breakup with her ex-boyfriend. Obviously, this was a sign that Melton was hardcore crushing on Mendes, and it's honestly so adorable.

A month later, they made it official on the 'gram!

Mendes shared the most precious photo ever of her and Melton, who's kissing her on the forehead. She simply captioned it: "mine." Fans immediately lost every last bit of cool.

"Omg what," one person commented. "Riverdale is real life." Another person summed up everyone's feelings perfectly: "You two are so damn cute together."

Sure, they might be #adorbs, but that doesn't mean Mendes wants to dish about their relationship.

"In my day-to-day life, I am an open book," she told LA Confidential. "But I've also developed this sixth sense. I understand how my spoken words can translate into written words and how things can appear out of context. It's like, yeah, even though I feel comfortable talking about some things, do I really want to see it written over and over again? Sometimes, it's not really worth it."

But she did say that working with Melton is "great."

In January, they traveled to South Korea together to ring in the New Year and to celebrate Charles's birthday. Melton wrote on his Instagram: "I taught her how to say 'shut up idiot' in Korean & now I really regret it. Happy almost new year." Yeah, he probably should have thought that one through all the way.

And it's worth noting that their South Korea trip gave the world this gem.

Mendes shared the photo on Instagram to commemorate Melton's birthday. "Happy birthday @melton I will always protect you," she captioned the image. "My heart hurts, so cute," one fan wrote. "I could stare at this picture all day best picture of all time," someone else said. And honestly, they're not wrong.

Mendes wants fans to know that her life is totally separate from her character's life on Riverdale.

"The show is fictional. I don't have an attachment to it," she told LA Confidential. "All [I'm attached] to is my character. Whatever direction the writers take, I will make it work. I am adaptable. I always make it work." And as for her IRL relationship with Melton, we'll just have to take whatever we can get on Instagram, and that's A-OK with us.
