In 2017, we were understandably torn apart by celebrity breakups like Selena Gomez and the Weeknd or Chris Pratt and Anna Faris. But as anyone who's lost a friend knows, a friendship ending is often a million times more painful than a relationship ending.
Here are the celebrity friendships we lost and mourned in 2017:
Camila Cabello and the rest of Fifth Harmony
The 2010s brought us boy band after boy band, but the only real girl group that's mattered this decade (in my opinion, and well, probably everyone else's) has been Fifth Harmony. But like all music groups before them, one member decided they'd had enough sharing the spotlight: Camila Cabello left the group in 2016, with Fifth Harmony putting out a statement that noted they were hurt by her leaving the band, but supported her always. Er... sure.
In 2017, the two factions put their drama into the spotlight, with Fifth Harmony shading Cabello every chance they got, telling Billboard, "Let’s just say we’re in a better place now -- there are no secrets in this circle" and then having a fake Camila Cabello fly off the stage at the 2017 VMAs. Yikes. Don't get your hopes up for a reunion.
Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles (and Aly Raisman)
In one of the more painful friendship breakups we witnessed this year, the beloved Final 5 gymnastics team recently got in a Twitter spat over sexual assault. After Aly Raisman opened up about being sexually assaulted by the USA Gymnastics team doctor, she wrote an inspiring note that reminded women they are never to blame for an assault, regardless of what they may wear.
Unfortunately, her teammate Gabby Douglas responded with a victim-shaming tweet, writing, "however it is our responsibility as women to dress modestly and be classy. dressing in provocative/sexual way entices the wrong crowd." Another teammate, Simone Biles, immediately jumped into the fray, saying, "Shocks me that I'm seeing this but it doesn't surprise me… honestly seeing this brings me to tears bc as your teammate I expected more from you & to support her. I support you Aly & all the other women out there!"
Douglas later apologized for her comments and even revealed she too had been sexually abused the team doctor.
Jennifer Aniston and Chelsea Handler
Jennifer Aniston and Chelsea Handler have been friends for years, with Handler often publicly slamming Angelina Jolie (you know, the woman Brad Pitt married after splitting from Jennifer Aniston, you may have heard of her before). They were spotted on vacations together and Handler was by her side when Aniston received her Hollywood Walk of Fame star.
But this year it all went mysteriously sour, with RadarOnline reporting the two had a falling out, claiming their mutual publicist even dumped Handler after the big fight. Afterward Gossip Cop insisted the two were still friendly, but had merely grown apart. Either way, it sounds like the pair won't be vacationing together anytime soon.
Donald Trump and Omarosa
Donald Trump and Omarosa have stuck together ever since Omarosa got her start in the public sphere as a reality TV villain on Trump's hit show "The Apprentice." Omarosa even followed Trump into the White House, working as the director of communications for the Public Liaison office.
Unfortunately, in December 2017, that cozy relationship came to an end after Omarosa was allegedly fired and physically escorted off the premises in a dramatic exit. The White House denied this, saying she left voluntarily to "pursue other opportunities," but sources say otherwise, according to the New York Post.
Kim Kardashian and Steph Shephard
KIM K AND STEPH SHEPHARD, SAY IT AIN'T SO! The reality TV star and beauty mogul seemed to always have assistant and close friend Steph Shephard right beside her, but this year it all came to an end when Kardashian fired Shephard... which came as a huge shock to fans, who thought Shephard was basically part of the family.
A source told PEOPLE, “Kim needed an assistant where the relationship is more professional... It’s very difficult to work with friends, so Kim decided to hire someone else. The bottom line is that Steph was hired as an assistant, and Kim wanted to keep it like that. They are not friends now.”
The source also noted that Kardashian felt Shephard was more focused on being a celebrity than an assistant. Ouch. (Can you blame her, Kim?!)
Jay-Z and Kanye West
We knew Jay-Z and Kanye West were on the rocks back in 2016, when Kanye West publicly called out his "Watch The Throne" collaborator and self-described "brother" during a concert. "Don't call me, after the robbery, and say 'how you feelin?'" he ranted, describing how he felt left behind by Jay-Z during a difficult time (his wife, Kim Kardashian, had just been robbed at gunpoint). West was later hospitalized for what many speculate was mental health issues, and fans hoped the famous rapper friends could make up.
However, Jay-Z's album "4:44" came out this year and squashed any hope of reconcilation. He said in one song, "I know people backstab you, I feel bad too / But this 'f--- everybody' attitude ain't natural / But you ain't the same, this ain't KumbaYe / But you got hurt because you did cool by 'Ye / You gave him 20 million without blinkin' / He gave you 20 minutes on stage, f--- was he thinkin'?/ 'F---in' wrong with everybody?' is what you sayin' / But if everybody's crazy, you're the one that's insane." West left Tidal, Jay-Z's streaming service, shortly after.
Jay-Z DID say at the end of 2017 that he and West are on speaking terms again, so you never know what 2018 could bring...
Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper
Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper were close friends for years, even co-hosting CNN's New Year's Eve special together. However, Griffin faced major blowback this year after posing with a fake bloody Trump head — and it wasn't just the public who turned against her. Griffin has since revealed it led to the end of her friendship with Cooper, too. She told The Cut Cooper didn't reach out to her until weeks after the scandal, even though he was still publicly calling her a friend, so she told him their relationship was over.
Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez
While Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez may have never been close, they certainly ran in the same circles and hung out — after all Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift are best friends, and Taylor is incredibly close with Gigi Hadid, Bella's sister.
However, after Selena Gomez was spotted making out with Bella Hadid's ex-boyfriend, The Weeknd, any friendly feelings between the two evaporated. Hadid unfollowed Gomez on all social media and hasn't been spotted anywhere near her since. Of course, now that Gomez is back with Justin Bieber, maybe there's a chance they can be civil again? Only time will tell...
Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift
This rumored friendship breakup has pierced the hearts of millions of fans: Taylor Swift might have a giant circle of best friends, but everyone's favorite is undoubtedly "Kaylor" — in fact, a popular fan theory claims the two actually date in real life (but of course, that's just wild internet speculation).
So fans were devastated to see Swift's "squad shirt" in her "Look What You Made Me Do" music video, which featured names of famous friends like Gigi Hadid and Lena Dunham... but no Karlie Kloss. Not only that, but Taylor Swift won't be appearing on Karlie Kloss' new Freeform show, "Movie Night With Karlie Kloss," which all of Kloss' other famous friends will be appearing on. Hmm...
Taylor Swift and Cara Delevingne
Also notably missing from Swift's squad shirt? Cara Delevingne, which has fans wondering if there's a rift there, too.
Taylor Swift and Lorde
And yup, Lorde didn't make the squad shirt cut, either, which has fans in a frenzy. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN, TAYLOR?!
Jeffree Star and Manny MUA
Is it surprising to anyone that Jeffree Star had friendship drama in 2017? Star and Manny MUA have appeared in countless YouTube videos together, but then it all seemed to abruptly stop out of nowhere. Not only did the videos end, but then Manny MUA didn't even wish him happy birthday on social media, instead tweeting, "Stay away from the negative people... they have a problem for every solution." And keep in mind, this was right after Star tweeted about getting rid of "fake" people in the beauty community.
Yikes. And while Manny MUA ended up publicly insisting they were still friends, it still all seems a little suspicious... and there hasn't been a video together since.
Jeffree Star and Laura Lee
But Jeffree Star didn't just break up with Manny MUA this year. 2017 also seemed to spell doom for his relationship with fellow makeup blogger Laura Lee, who ALSO didn't wish him a happy birthday this year, instead posting photos out with other makeup bloggers — including known Starr enemy, Jaclyn Hill. Lee has basically vanished from Star's social media and YouTube page ever since.
Drake Bell and Josh Peck
In one of the randomest friendship breakups of 2017, Drake Bell and Josh Peck (from your favorite childhood TV show about mismatched step-siblings gushing about Oprah) got into a dramatic public feud. Josh Peck got married to Paige O'Brien earlier this year... but instead of wishing him congratulations, Bell got into his feelings about not being invited to the wedding.
"True colors have come out today,” he tweeted. “Message is loud and clear. Ties are officially cut. I’ll miss you brother.” Sources soon insisted Bell hadn't even spoken to Peck in years, but plenty of millennials still felt like their childhood was irrevocably damaged by the news.
Peck and Bell ended up hugging it out at the VMAs this year, but we somehow doubt they'll ever be actual friends again.
Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall
When I heard about this friendship breakup, I couldn't help but wonder, is a forever friendship too much to expect? Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall may be the subject of every friendship-themed gif you send your friends, but in real life, the two won't be grabbing brunch anytime soon. The "Sex and The City" co-stars have been rumored to have beef for years, but 2017 was when all that bad blood finally came out in the open.
After Sarah Jessica Parker told "Extra" the "Sex and The City 3" movie was dead ("I'm disappointed. We had this beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script and story."), castmate Wille Garson tweeted, "Disappointed for all crew holding on for negotiations to conclude for their jobs, and of course, for the fans. Leave it at that. #Truth." It quickly emerged that Kim Cattrall was the sole holdout.
Cattrall was furious, singling out SJP. She told Piers Morgan, "And now, now at this very moment it's quite extraordinary to get any kind of negative press about something that I've been saying for almost a year of 'no' that I'm demanding or a diva. And this is really where I take to task the people from Sex and the City and specifically Sarah Jessica Parker in that I think she could have been nicer. I really think she could have been nicer. I don't know what her issue is, I never have."
Harry Styles and Liam Payne
Sorry, One Directioners, Liam Payne hates Harry Styles. Well, his music taste anyway. When asked about his former bandmate and pal's new album, Payne told Music Choice, “Harry’s song I heard, and I’ll be honest with you, it’s not my sort of music, it's not something I’d listen to."
Liam Payne has continued to insist that he loves Harry Styles, but I'm sure that burn has not been forgotten by Styles.
Jake Paul and Alissa Violet
OK, this one might be cheating because they did, in fact, used to date. However the YouTube stars were still friendly even when their relationship was off, but it all blew up this year after a final breakup that led to cheating allegations (both sides) and accusations of emotional and verbal abuse, all playing out over social media.
Kim Kardashian and Caitlyn Jenner
Kim Kardashian stood by her step-parent's side during her transition, but Caitlyn Jenner's tell-all memoir sent the pair's relationship to an early grave. Kardashian publicly slammed the book, insisting Jenner was unfair toward her mother, Kris, and lied about their relationship. It's gotten so bad that Jenner recently revealed they haven't spoken in months.
Stassi Schroeder and Scheana Marie
If you're a religious watcher of "Vanderpump Rules," you know that Stassi Schroeder and Scheana Marie were once good friends and part of the same group — that is, until Stassi fell out of favor with everyone. Now, Stassi is back in everyone's good graces, and it seems like she's kicked Scheana out of the clique. The women never show up in pictures on social media together anymore, and they barely filmed together during this season. Yikes.
The Rock and Tyrese
Despite the fact that the "Fast and Furious" film franchise preaches "family" (or as Vin Diesel calls it, "fambly"), above all else, there's some bad blood behind the scenes. After it came out that "Fast 9" will be delayed because of the Rock's spinoff with Jason Statham, Tyrese was, well, uh, furious.
He commented on one of the Rock's Instagrams, "If you move forward with that #Hobbs Movie you will have purposely ignored the heart to heart moment we had in my sprinter. I don't wanna hear from you until you remember what we talked about. I'm on your timeline cause you're not responding to my text messages – #FastFamily is just that a family…….. We don't fly solo."
Later he wrote, "Congratulations to @TheRock and your brother in law aka 7 bucks producing partner @hhgarcia41 for making the fast and the furious franchise about YOU - And like you, DJ even if they call I will not be deleting this post. Gn folks see you in 2020 April #FastFamily right? Nah..... it's about #TeamDewayne #3yrs will it be worth the wait? #NoShaw just Hobbs will this be another #BayWatch? Guys guys just relax I'm just a passionate film critic."
And then to top it all off, he threatened to quit if the Rock was in the "Fast 9" movie. Tyrese later claimed the pair had a heart-to-heart and made up, although he still seemed to shade him with the comment.
The Rock and Vin Diesel
But Tyrese wasn't the only one upset with the Rock. The Rock and Vin Diesel may be "brothers" onscreen, but in real life, it's apparently way rockier (I'm sorry, I can't help it!). Back in 2016, there were rumors about tension behind the scenes of "The Fate of The Furious" with the two trying to out-alpha-male the other, basically. The Rock even posted an Instagram calling a "male costar" a "candy ass."
Still, the pair insist they have since made up, with Vin Diesel claiming the Rock is "Uncle Dwayne" in his house. With the news of the Rock's spinoff and "Fast 9's" delay, however, rumors of bad blood between the two have started up again.
Louis C.K. and Tig Notaro
Tig Notaro arguably got a boost in the comedy world from her friendship with Louis C.K, who promoted her comedy work and eventually was made producer on her show "One Mississippi." But this year, Notaro seemed to want to make it clear her friendship with C.K. was over.
When asked about her relationship with him in a summer interview with The Daily Beast, she insisted he had never been part of the show and said they hadn't talked in over a year. She was also very aware of the many rumors of sexual misconduct swirling around him (which would later be revealed in a New York Times expose), saying, “I think it’s important to take care of that, to handle that, because it’s serious to be assaulted. It’s serious to be harassed. It’s serious, it’s serious, it’s serious.”
Rose McGowan and Alyssa Milano
Rose McGowan was a major force in the #MeToo movement, bravely speaking out against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, who allegedly raped her years ago. She has been consistently fighting against the rampant sexual abuse in Hollywood ever since, and so has friend and "Charmed" costar Alyssa Milano, who helped start the #MeToo campaign on social media.
Unfortunately, though they're on the same side of the fight, McGowan felt betrayed after Milano told "Megyn Kelly Today" she still considers Harvey Weinstein's estranged wife, Georgina Chapman, a good friend and a "good woman."
McGowan tweeted, "You make me want to vomit. You actually gave me a body flashback. Well done, fake one." She later wrote, "Alyssa, maybe you and Georgina can call up Camille Cosby."
Drake and Kendrick Lamar
Drake and Kendrick Lamar are both rappers at the top of their game, and as such, they've done everything from collaborating on music to outright shading each other.
While the two toured together several years back and have made music together, in recent years it seems like the pair has been sending subliminal messages at each other through their songs, with Lamar supposedly accusing Drake of using ghostwriters and Drake calling Lamar "the underdog who's extremely hungry."
It seemed like the feud had died down and the former friends were at least civil with each other, but Lamar allegedly made more digs at Drake on his latest album this year. Then during a Rolling Stone interview, he was asked about his favorite Drake song. His reply? "Favorite Drake song [chuckles]. I got a lot of favorite Drake songs. Can't name one off the back.... He has plenty."
Yup, sounds like this friendship is officially dead and buried.
Stacy London and Clinton Kelly
If you're a huge "What Not To Wear" fan, we have heartbreaking news for you. Hosts Clinton Kelly and Stacy London are apparently friends no more, as made obvious by London's shady social media maneuver.
The two used to be so close "they finished each other's sentences," according to Kelly, but then not even a year after their show ended, he discovered he'd been blocked from her Twitter account. He shared the screenshot on Twitter with the caption, "Allll righty then," leaving fans crushed.
