There's really nothing that Rihanna can't do. But when it comes to fashion, the levels she's able to reach are nothing short of awe-inspiring. So every year around this time, we sit eagerly awaiting her Met Gala look, preparing to be blown away yet again. And since 2007, she's given us our life every year, stomping out the competition, and executing the theme to a tee.
So what better way to anticipate the biggest night in fashion — which will occur on Monday, May 6 this year — than with a recap of every single Rihanna Met Gala look to date? Even better, we've ranked them based on how well she conveyed each theme, and we think you'll agree with our selections.
Check it out for yourself.
2007 — Poiret: King of Fashion
With her mega-hit song "Umbrella" climbing the charts, Rihanna attended her first Met Gala as a newbie to the super-stardom that began to form. With that simple, sleek bob that started the trend of the year, she walked the carpet in an ethereal white dress with ornate jeweled embellishment. Though her personal theme for the year may have been "Good Girl Gone Bad," she sure looked like an angel.
2012 — Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations
She played it safe in 2012 by wearing a high-neck, alligator-print Tom Ford gown. She effortlessly pinned her hair up into an almost-chignon and wore only a smidge of makeup. And though this superstar is our forever fave, we weren't raving over this dress. While beautiful, it wasn't the out-of-the-box look we had come to expect.
2011 — Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty
And a savage beauty she was. In a sheer, black lace dress that was showing major leg, she was the belle of the ball without even trying. But the true highlight of her look was a long, red braid that hung to her waist paired with an unexpected pop of green in her chandelier earrings. We couldn't get enough.
2009 — The Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion
Bow tie.... But make it fashion. There was no doubt in 2009 who had won the Met, and even less doubt that Rihanna would later become a fashion icon to be reckoned with. In a suit that would still rock the red carpet a decade later, she ditched the traditional dress for something a lot more edgy and a short cut with streaks of bleach blonde.
2014 — Charles James Beyond Fashion
This all-white Stella McCartney number will be talked about for decades and decades to come. Showing off some body and donning a tousled ponytail that we could only dream of recreating, Rihanna stepped on the carpet with this iconic look in 2014, and fashion hasn't been the same since.
2015 — China: Through The Looking Glass
After wowing everyone in 2014, it was only right that she keep the momentum going into 2015. From the moment she stepped on the red carpet, it seemed like every other celebrity following was a complete afterthought. This elaborate dress that took two years to make exuded the rich widow vibes we can only aspire to achieve. It was rather appropriate seeing as she had just released "B**** Better Have My Money."
2017 — Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of The In-Between
Just when we thought she couldn't get any better, she did it again. Looking like true art, she stepped on the carpet in an ornate structured gown that looked like the garden of our dreams. The daring look earned her the title of best dressed on every style ranking out there.
2018 — Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination
And the true winner, for obvious reasons, is Ri's 2018 look. As everyone sat by their phones and television screens awaiting her arrival, we would have never expected an outfit as dynamic as this. Dare we say it? She put the Pope to shame.
And who could forget that iconic pose?
We've never felt more broke until this moment right here. In the most dazzling mini dress, coat, and headdress we've ever seen, she caused jaws to drop to the floor in almost an instant. To add even more drama to the look, Rihanna was dripped in Cartier diamonds and rocked a sky-high, jeweled Christian Louboutin heel.
