Gigi Hadid has been walking the runway for years now, but unfortunately, no celebrity is ever immune to the harsh scrutiny on Twitter. After the model was body shamed for her appearance at New York Fashion Week, she clapped back by opening up about her invisible disease.
The model took to Twitter to deal with people critiquing her figure, explaining her weight loss has to do with Hashimoto's disease.
For those of you so determined to come up w why my body has changed over the years, you may not know that when I started @ 17 I was not yet diagnosed w/Hashimoto’s disease; those of u who called me “too big for the industry” were seeing inflammation & water retention due to that.

Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disease caused by an under-active thyroid gland. Gina Rodriguez, Kim Cattrall, Missy Elliot, and a few other female celebrities have been outspoken about having the illness.
Luckily, Hadid sought help to lessen the symptoms of the disease.
Over the last few years I’ve been properly medicated to help symptoms including those, as well as extreme fatigue, metabolism issues, body’s ability to retain heat, etc ... I was also part of a holistic medical trial that helped my thyroid levels balance out.

Hadid was honest about the harsh reality of dealing with Hashimoto's, explaining that her weight loss wasn't something she wanted.
Although stress & excessive travel can also affect the body, I have always eaten the same, my body just handles it differently now that my health is better. I may be “too skinny” for u, honestly this skinny isn’t what I want to be, but I feel healthier internally and (cont)

Hadid wants to shed light on the pressure people put on others to have the "perfect body."
I will not further explain the way my body looks, just as anyone, with a body type that doesnt suit ur “beauty” expectation, shouldnt have to. Not to judge others, but drugs are not my thing, stop putting me in that box just because u dont understand the way my body has matured.
— Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid) February 11, 2018
Hadid made it clear she's tired of all the speculation about her changing body, including rumors that she does drugs. "Not to judge others, but drugs are not my thing, stop putting me in that box just because u dont understand the way my body has matured," she wrote in her tweet.
She also noted she would longer "explain the way [her] body looks."
The star wants everyone to be more empathetic when it comes to using social media.
Please, as social media users & human beings in general, learn to have more empathy for others and know that you never really know the whole story. Use your energy to lift those that you admire rather than be cruel to those u don’t.

Hadid's Twitter rant clearly struck a chord with a few of her A-list friends:
alternate tweet: “fuck off” ❤️

Can’t wait to see you in Milan. Sorry you too have to explain something so ridiculous to people. Love to you. Love to the people who try to tear down others also because they are just people who haven’t had the spiritual growth that needs to occur to love and accept one another.

This isn't the first time the model has opened up about her disease.
"My metabolism actually changed like crazy this year," she said in 2016. "I have Hashimoto's disease. It's a thyroid disease, and it's now been two years since taking the medication for it, so for the VS show I didn't want to lose any more weight, I just want to have muscles in the right place, and if my butt can get a little perkier, then that's good."
Hopefully, Hadid's words will inspire people to think before they tweet. You never know what someone else is going through.
