It's hard to imagine a time when Jennifer Lopez's famous curves were rejected by sizeist society.
But JLo can vividly remember when her body felt far from the ideal.
In a recent interview with InStyle, Lopez recalled the cruel, body-shaming "advice" she received early in her career from higher ups in the entertainment industry.
"I got a lot of flak for [my body] from people in the industry," the 48-year-old mother of two recounted. "They’d say, ‘You should lose a few pounds,’ or ‘You should do this or do that.’"
But even though she was just starting out, Lopez wasn't afraid to give the perfect response to her body-shamers.
Lopez's mother and grandmother taught her to embrace the body type they were all born with.
"My mom and my grandmother were the ones who drilled into me, ‘This is how we are, and this is what’s beautiful,'" Lopez added. "My dad loved my mom’s body — all the men in our family loved the women’s bodies. Being curvy or not being 6 feet tall was never a bad thing; it was actually something that was celebrated. And so, later on, when I brought that in front of the world, I wasn’t really trying to send a message. I was just being myself.”
