Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart are textbook "Are they or aren't they?"

The extremely private couple has managed to avoid confirming their relationship status for years, but they still keeps fans guessing, posting cryptic or flirty posts on social media. The latest head-scratcher is a love poem that Reinhart wrote her rumored ex for his birthday.

It was heavily reported that the on-screen couple broke up in real life, but the two have clapped back at the publicity; now Reinhart seems to have squashed the rumors entirely. Maybe it's just another measure to keep people guessing, and it has worked — fans are utterly confused.

The couple completely clapped back at the breakup gossip by posting their shared W magazine cover.

Both Reinhart and Sprouse shared the steamy W cover photo that's set in a vampiric, dystopian future. The issue dropped days after the breakup reports broke, so the two took the opportunity to clap back.

Reinhart wrote, "BREAKING: A reliable source has confirmed that none of you know [redacted]." And Sprouse wrote, "UNPRECEDENTED: Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart consume the flesh of ‘reliable sources’ to fuel their bacchanalian sex cult."

Even in this couples profile, the two were interviewed separately, and whether that's because the relationship was or is on the rocks is completely undetermined.

The private couple discussed their relationship, a little, in the W magazine story.

Sprouse told the magazine about the nature of the duo's private relationship, "I think part of the fun that the audience had, and still has, is going: 'What’s up with them right now? I't’s interesting! But in all honesty, my own happiness and her happiness come before caring about what people are saying."

In the standard W screen test, Reinhart revealed that she thinks Betty Cooper will be getting married well before she does, not that we'd even know if she ever tied the knot IRL.

Reinhart also told the magazine that she doesn't like the fame aspect of her lifestyle. "I applied to Urban Outfitters and a tanning salon before I booked Riverdale. It’s not like I’m used to this life... I don’t handle it super well. I am a very paranoid person now because of it. I watch people watching me. I look at their faces to see if they’re looking at me, if they know who I am. It’s not because I want to be recognized; I’m just trying to prepare myself. It can be startling when they come up to you when you’re not expecting it."

And Cole Sprouse shared in his video that fame can be toxic, especially for young men in the industry.

"You develop a moral sickness when you're in front of the camera for a long time... the part of the industry that's fascinated with celebrity and idolatry and that part of the industry and the publicity and all of that can be dangerously validating, especially for young men."

Sprouse had an entirely different past before Riverdale than his girlfriend and has his own reasons for remaining private now. Growing up as a child star, it's clear that Sprouse is ready for a life more closed off from the public eye.

Still, the couple managed to stir up rumors again with a recent romantic Instagram post.

Reinhart's latest Instagram post is a solo shot of Sprouse captioned with a poem for his birthday, and it has left fans utterly confused.

"I tried to find a poem that I could send to you. Because my words were failing me. But I searched and found nothing that did you justice. All of these love poems can’t get it right. No one else’s words could ever fit. They haven’t known the fortune it is to love you. -sappy nighttime birthday poem for @colesprouse," Reinhart wrote.

Naturally, Sprouse had a sarcastic comment to make on Reinhart's heartfelt post.

Sprouse kept things casual with a witty, "Follow for follow?" reply to her sappy message. Fans commented mostly with messages of confusion and some with relief that the two appear to be happier than ever. Reinhart's caption seemed to obviously suggest that they're totally still together, though, if the two were trying to hide anything. Some of their costars have hinted that the breakup rumors were completely false, too.

Sprouse thanked his fans and friends for the birthday wishes on his Instagram story.

As fans have continued to see, the couple isn't going to confirm or deny anything, but Reinhart's birthday message was pretty telling that things are going well for the couple. Even at the best of times in their relationship, the only sign that the two were smitten were their sappy social media posts.

Now it's time to keep a keen eye on their pages for any more signs that the two are "endgame" in real life, just like their on-screen characters.
