Some famous families have undeniably strong genetics — the Kardashians, Reese Witherspoon and her daughter Ava Phillippe, Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn — but one new face in Stranger Things had fans scratching their heads wondering how they recognized her.
Maya Hawke, who plays new character Robin in season three of Stranger Things, is a perfect 50-50 combination of her '90s heartthrob parents Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. The now-divorced couple, who met on the set of the 1997 sci-fi thriller Gattaca, had a highly publicized relationship during the peak of their fame. Thurman and Hawke share two children: Maya and her younger brother, Levon Roan.
Maya's Robin has quickly become a favorite character in the series and made a great addition to the crew. In interviews she's often asked about the influence her parents have had on her acting career.
Lucky for the 21-year-old, her parents were already fans of the show and didn't hold back their criticism. Maya shared that her parents are "rigorous" with their commentary on shows they like and dislike. The critically acclaimed actors starred in popular films like Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2, Training Day, and Before Sunrise. Maya told Sirius XM that despite Thurman and Hawke's fame, they felt like a relatively normal family.
In this 1994 interview with Thurman promoting Pulp Fiction on David Letterman's late-night show, their similar sounds are clear.
A 24-year-old Thurman appeared on the late-night show and gave hints about the gritty Quentin Tarantino film. The old-school interview has a few bizarre moments including one in which Letterman attempts to create a psychic connection with the actor. Listen to Thurman's voice and compare it with her newly famous daughter's.
If you needed any further proof that Maya is actually just a clone, then feast your eyes on this side-by-side image.
People had hilarious reactions to the stars' uncanny resemblance. One person thought the actor reminded them of an optical illusion: "It's like an optical illusion where she looks like either Ethan or Uma depending on who you're thinking about."
Another envied the fact that she acquired the best-looking parts of both of her drop-dead-gorgeous parents: "AND SHE TOOK THE BEST FEATURES OF BOTH HOW [redacted] LUCKY."
