She had the confidence to go after what she wanted, but the 47-year-old actress is also the first to admit that it took her some time to really find her place.
In a recent interview with People, McCarthy revealed there's bits of advice that she wishes she could go back and tell her younger self.
Namely, to stop with the self-doubts.
If McCarthy had a time machine, she'd tell 10-year-old Melissa to stop questioning every little thing about herself.
McCarthy has spent the past few months directing a commercial for Walmart that is set to air during this year's Oscars. In the commercial, a woman opens a "box" that is actually a portal to her past.
If McCarthy had access to that same magical box, she told People that she'd travel back 37 years to her 10-year-old self.
"If I could go back in time and tell my 10-year-old self anything, I would tell her, 'Don’t worry about what other people think, or about whether you’re doing what they think is the right thing,'” McCarthy said. “'The things you worry about now, they mostly won’t matter. So just follow your heart.'”
(Cue the tears!)
McCarthy said she'd also make a pit stop to visit her 16-year-old self.
“I would tell my 16-year-old self, in a few years, you’re going to go nuts,” McCarthy joked.
She added, “Just be nicer to your mom and dad when you do.”
Time travel is still only possible in commercials, but at least McCarthy can relay this wisdom to her daughters, Vivian (age 10) and Georgette (age 7).
McCarthy is full of motherly love and advice.
