Less than a week after Liam Hemsworth filed for divorce and Miley Cyrus went on a Twitter rant about their messy breakup, the singer performed her heartbreaking song "Slide Away" at the MTV Video Music Awards.
At the awards show, the artist also debuted two new meaningful tattoos, one of which was inspired by her latest trip to Italy, where she was spotted with Kaitlynn Carter; the other tat is heartbreaking song lyrics that feel hyper-specific to her breakup with Hemsworth.
The 26-year-old musician performed a soulful and beautiful rendition of the raw song that was praised by all of her fans and her biggest fans, her parents.
Miley Cyrus had viewers in tears during this heartfelt performance of her latest single "Slide Away."
The singer performed this single for the first time on the VMAs stage, and proved that her pipes are strong without any bells or whistles. The wet hair look added to the raw live performance, in which her vocals never faltered. Plus, fans were quick to notice a new tat to her ever-growing collection of ink.
The new ink is featured prominently on her biceps and is a touching song lyric.
At the VMAs, Cyrus was first pictured with the new tribute. In classic Miley Cyrus fashion, she posed with silly expressions before taking the stage and completing a jaw-dropping performance. Observant fans noticed the new ink right away and zoomed in to get a better idea of what it says.
ET caught up with Cyrus' mom, Tish, and asked her about her daughter.
The proud mom was excited that the star was performing last-minute at the VMAs. Cyrus was offered the opportunity and decided to take the chance to perform her song, despite being in the midst of a highly publicized breakup. When a reporter asked how Miley was doing post-breakup, Tish scoffed and said, "My girl? Always good."
