Could there be a more unlikely Hollywood friendship pairing than Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg?
On Monday (August 8), it was announced the rapper and lifestyle guru will be co-hosting a new unscripted VH1 series, "Martha & Snoop's Dinner Party," premiering this fall. Following the reveal, the rapper spoke about their friendship to The Hollywood Reporter, saying, "My homegirl, Martha, and I have a special bond that goes back. We’re gonna be cooking, drinking and having a good time with our exclusive friends. Can’t wait for you to see how we roll together!"
The announcement has left many of us generally confused. When did these two meet? How exactly do they roll? And what events could've preceded this VH1 series for the pairing to possibly make sense?
In actuality, Stewart and Snoop have been kicking it for awhile. Here's a timeline of their unexpected friendship.
It all started back in '08, when Snoop guest-starred on "Martha," helping her whip up some mashed potatoes.
The potatoes, based off a recipe of Stewart's mother, were made using an unanticipated ingredient — destiny. In this initial meeting, the two have clearly already struck up a natural repartee. Snoop even taught Stewart some new vocabulary, which she wrote about afterward on her blog.
"He and his posse add 'izzles' onto the ends of words," she wrote. "It's kind of a code, or a way of communicating so that others won't know what they're talking about. Example: fo shizzle is how they say, for sure."
The two got along so well, Stewart invited him back a year later for another episode — this time to make special-colored brownies.
“He wanted us to make green-colored brownies. How come green?" Stewart asked him on-camera. "Green is... environmental," the rapper joked. The two continued to make joking references to bud throughout the episode, and Stewart was totally game for it, which bodes well for their upcoming show's illicit humor potential.
Then, in 2014, Stewart talked about Snoop in a Reddit AMA, saying she wished they were closer.
She also tried to summon him onto Reddit by claiming she had more brownies for him.
Her wish was granted. The two reconnected during Comedy Central's roast of Justin Bieber in 2015, and Snoop reportedly got her stoned.
In an interview with Seth Myers, Stewart talked about hanging with him during the roast, claiming that by the end she was "totally high."
"I got high just sitting there," she said. "Snoop had all those, you don’t call them joints, you call them something else. Big fat ones. We had to sit on the stage for four hours, and the secondary smoke is just as powerful as regular smoke. So I was totally high."
Most recently, the friends teamed back up for an episode of "$100,000 Pyramid."
And they totally killed it. For the first (naturally) weed-themed round, Stewart got Snoop to answer seven out of seven questions correctly, landing them a perfect score. They nailed their second round, too, with Snoop showing off an impressive knowledge of home decor buzzwords. In the end, it seems like these two might have more in common than you'd initially expect.
One thing's for sure. The ~appetizers~ for their show are sure to be plentiful and potent.
