Canadian model and former "America's Next Top Model" contestant Winnie Harlow recently decided to celebrate her natural hair ... at the expense of another Black girl.
Over the weekend, Harlow switched up her hair and proudly revealed her natural curls on social media. But drama began when her sister joked on Snapchat that her hair looked like a head full of curly fries. Thinking that she was being playful, Harlow reportedly pulled up a picture of South Sudanese model Nyadak Thot, aka Duckie, to compare hairstyles.
The picture, which has since been deleted, allegedly showed Duckie posing for an ad with her natural hair in a high ponytail alongside the caption, “LMFAO! WHAT ARE THOOOOOSEEEEE cauliflower ass head.”
The 22-year-old became famous for succeeding in the modeling industry despite having the skin condition vitiligo. She's been known to advocate for different types of beauty in the fashion industry, and has been candid about being called a "cow" and "zebra" because of her skin tone. So many were confused why she, of all people, would pick on someone for their natural features.
After noticing all of the backlash, user screenshots seem to show Harlow tried to defend her actions in another now-deleted Instagram post.
“I know what it feels like to be forced to do a lot of things with your hair that you’re uncomfortable with. As a Black woman in the industry and as a Black woman period, it’s hard to deal with your hair," she said. "Not a lot of people know how to deal with your hair. So please understand, from deep in my heart, I apologize if I hurt anyone’s feelings. I am human, I do crack jokes with my friends and family…”
But very few fans have moved past Harlow's comments, so they've dragged her on social media.
Regardless of what her hair texture is, Duckie is a gorgeous girl.
We're happy to see that she doesn't let negative comments bring her down.
