When a woman's partner attempts to interfere with her birth control, they're engaging in reproductive coercion. It's manipulative, disgusting, and rarely discussed — despite the fact that 9% of women in the US report being the victims of reproductive coercion, according to the CDC.

This is exactly what Ian Somerhalder did to his wife, Nikki Reed, when he shamelessly revealed to Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy that he threw out her birth control pills without her permission. And since he doesn't seem to understand the problem, Twitter is letting him know why it's so abusive.

Somerhalder admits that he threw away the entire pack of Reed's birth control pills while on vacation in Spain.

He told Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy, "We decided that we wanted to have children together, and it was just time. But unbeknownst to poor Nikki, she didn’t realize that I was going to go in her purse and take out her birth control."

Somerhalder revealed he then drunkenly videotaped himself popping each individual pill out of the pack. He even admitted that his actions indicate he made it his decision to have a baby — " Actually, now thinking about it, I guess I kind of decided [to start a family]" — but doesn't seem to see anything wrong with it.

But, uh, there are so many things wrong with it.

It's non-consensual.

By throwing away her contraception without her permission, she no longer has the option to go back on their decision try to have a baby. No matter what they may have originally decided in their relationship, it's her body, so it's her choice.

The fact that he threw the pills away while they were abroad is especially manipulative, considering that she can't just pop into any pharmacy abroad and buy birth control without a prescription.

It takes Reed's autonomy of her body out of her hands.

It's not a joke, nor something to brag about.

It's dangerous behavior, and it should not be promoted or taken lightly. By making it seem like a joke, it encourages other people to think of it as no big deal, too.

As of now, the couple has yet to respond to the backlash.

Nikki Reed gave birth to their baby, Bodhi Soleil Reed Somerhalder, in July. And while the couple seems to be very happy together, it doesn't change the fact that Somerhalder's actions were wrong. Let's hope they come out and denounce reproductive coercion, because it's no joke and it needs to be taken seriously.
