She discovered she's mainly Spanish with some Native American, Scandinavian, Irish, and British ties.
"I did a DNA test and found out I'm mainly Spanish with Native American, Scandinavian (which I had no idea), Irish, British..." she told her Twitter followers.
But Lovato was especially thrilled to find out that she's 1% African.
"And I'm 1% African!!!!" she boasted.
Twitter, however, didn't want to hear it.
The internet immediately started dragging Lovato for her "discovery."
One person pointed out that nearly every person on the globe can trace his or her ancestry back to Africa.
While others took advantage of the opportune moment to squeeze in a "Mean Girls" reference.
Upon noticing the controversy, Lovato jumped back on Twitter to clarify her tweet.
"Just thought it was cool and totally random," the singer insisted. "Some of y'all are mean af. Twitter sucks."
She posted her DNA results to Twitter in an attempt to defend herself against the backlash.
But it was too late. The damage was already done.
Unfortunately for Lovato, Twitter is not quick to forgive and forget.
