It is a beauty truth universally acknowledged: it takes a lot of effort to look effortless, and nowhere is this more evident than when it comes to no makeup-makeup.

My daily beauty look relies heavily on making it look like #IWokeUpLikeThis, but really it's anything but. And I know I'm not alone.

I asked several of my coworkers how many products it takes for them to create their best "natural" look. Turns out you need quite a lot of makeup to look like you're wearing no makeup at all.

This is Victoria. She may look totally bare-faced, but in reality...

She's wearing seven different makeup products.

On her gorgeous face: foundation, concealer, brow pencil, blush, powder, mascara, and lipstick.

But she used eight different products — and half an hour in the morning — to create this look.

She used foundation, translucent powder, blush, liquid AND powder highlighters, brow pencil, mascara, and lip gloss.

Emily may look like she's completely bare-faced...

But her naked-faced makeup look requires four products.

She's wearing tinted moisturizer, concealer, powder, and a 2-in-1 cream blush / lipstick combo. Alas for we mere mortals, those flawless brows are unenhanced.

And then there's yours truly, glowing like a radiant angel.

I used 15 different makeup products to create the illusion that I'm wearing no makeup at all.

I'm wearing primer, concealer, translucent powder, eyelid primer, two different eye shadows, two different shades of liquid highlighter, two different mascaras (one for top lashes and a waterproof one for bottom), two different brow products (pencil and gel), lip pencil, and two shades of lipstick mixed together to create my perfect nude.

Honestly, I could have used more, but I ran out of time.

Brit, on the other hand...

Is ACTUALLY wearing no makeup.

As in, zero products.

So the next time you're tempted to get down on yourself because your bare face isn't #nofilter perfect, just know that an awful lot of work goes into looking effortless.
