Everyone's favorite quotable movie just got a line of apparel for Pride Month designed by one of the movie's lead actors, Jonathan Bennett.
Bennett plays Aaron Samuels, North Shore High School's resident hottie, who's not the best at calculus. Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) and Regina George (Rachel McAdams) feud over the boy whose hair looks sexy pushed back. Little to their knowledge, Samuels, or at least the actor who played him, was gay all along.
Bennett is an out and proud member of the queer community. After his role in the 2004 classic, Bennett has appeared as the host of the Food Network's Cake Wars, written a Mean Girls–inspired cookbook, made a cameo in Ariana Grande's "Thank U, Next" music video, and joined the cast of CBS's Celebrity Big Brother.
His latest endeavor is a collaboration with T-shirt brand Tipsy Elves, for which he designed a line of Pride-themed tank tops that feature quotes from the iconic film.
On Wednesdays We Wear Rainbows Tank Top, Men's ($25, Tipsy Elves)
Bennett has embraced his most popular role to date. The former Mean Girls star revealed to TooFab that he was advised to keep his sexuality to himself during the 2004 era. He came out in October 2017, when he posted photos to his Instagram with his current boyfriend, Jaymes Vaughan.
"I never really talked about it when Mean Girls came out; my friends all knew. I just was kind of told not by anyone specifically but everyone [to stay closeted]. We lived in a weird world where us actors who were working in the public eye at the time that were gay, we all didn't know what to do," Bennett said.
Gay For Aaron Samuels Tank Top, Men's ($25, Tipsy Elves)
Bennett's beau even modeled some of the tanks with him in the promotion for the line. The 38-year-old actor revealed to TooFab that he asked his boyfriend to wear this tank, because duh. "I was like, 'Babe, you have to wear the 'Gay for Aaron Samuels' one in the photo.' And he was like, 'Yeah, totally, because I am.' I started cracking up," he said.
Too Gay To Function Tank Top, Men's ($25, Tipsy Elves)
10% of the proceeds from these Pride tanks will go to The Trevor Project, an organization founded in 1998 that provides support to the LGBTQ community. Bennett shared that he thought it was important that Mean Girls was a film that was so widely appreciated and featured a gay character in a lead role.
"I'm also proud of Mean Girls because it was — for this generation — one of the first movies to have a predominantly gay character that was one of the leads. Damien was such an important part to a lot of high school kids for this generation," he told TooFab.
Get in Loser Tank Top, Men's ($25, Tipsy Elves)
The shirts are produced by the company Tipsy Elves, which found success after it was featured on Shark Tank. Originally the brand created funny Christmas sweaters, but expanded to include graphic tees, sweatshirts, and more. Bennett shared that he was a fan of the company, so he approached it to do a collaboration. The company's mission is to "make the most outrageous clothes known to mankind in order to make your life more fun."
Making Fetch Happen Tank Top, Women's ($25, Tipsy Elves)
Sizes range from XS to XXL in men's and women's designs. Gretchen Weiner's (Lacey Chabert) iconic line gets a chance at notoriety with this tank.
Bennett shared why he is unafraid to embrace the movie that brought him fame as Aaron Samuels, as opposed to keeping it in his past. "Because Aaron Samuels is something that makes so many people happy... Also, you're not going to get away from Mean Girls. Mean Girls is everything. Mean Girls is more than a movie, it's a part of people's life."
Regulation Hottie Tank Top, Women's ($25, Tipsy Elves)
Janis Ian (Lizzy Caplan) tells Cady (Lohan) that she's a "regulation hottie," sparking another famous quote from the film. Damien (Daniel Franzese) also shared in the exchange by giving Cady the rundown on what the social scene at North Shore was like. "Oh, you'll get socialized all right, a little slice like you," he says. "What are you talking about?" Cady replies, and Janis finishes it off with, "You're a regulation hottie."
I Take Pride In My Cakes Tank Top, Men's ($25, Tipsy Elves)
While most of the tanks are Mean Girls–themed, Bennett did pull inspiration from some of his other projects. The actor famously created a cookbook with recipes based on the movie. Plus, Bennett was the host of the Food Network's Cake Wars, which inspired this quote that could also be a double entendre... "cake." All of the tanks are $25 and available now.
