Black girls are magic and so is our hair. It grows upward and outward. It's resilient. It can be transformed time and time again — even into a beautiful galactical masterpiece.
Pierre Jean-Louis, an artist who works in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia, is literally turning Black girl's hair magical by adorning their 'fros with stunning nature photos.
An array of bright hues, like oranges and purples, pop up in the series, which shows forests and galaxies in Jean-Louis subjects' hair. The artist took the stunning "Black Girl Magic" images this past September using the Enlight app after following several natural hair accounts on Instagram.
"I was amazed to see how so many Black women are finally letting go of their insecurities and accept themselves for who they are," he told Revelist in an email. "All of my muses are beautiful queens who feel comfortable enough to rock out their beautiful natural hair."
He said that these photos, which he doesn't plan to exhibit in a gallery, are his way of saying Black women matter.
"It's a way to show the world that Mother Nature is actually Black and we wouldn't be here without her," Jean-Louis told Revelist in an email.
