Kayla Hurley used to weigh 357 pounds. The 24-year-old nurse decided to lose weight after a trip to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay in 2014. She told My San Antonio that she couldn't ride a Busch Gardens rollercoaster because of her size, which is the moment she decided she needed to be smaller.
"That was the moment that I was like, 'I need to do something different,'" she told My San Antonio.
The private nursing assistant lost 193 pounds over the course of two years.
In a brutally honest Imgur post, Hurley revealed the true impact of losing almost 200 pounds.
She wrote that extreme weight loss has left excess skin all over her body, especially around her abdomen, upper chest, and arms.
"It causes back and skin problems. It changes the way I can exercise and alters my center of gravity," Hurley wrote on Imgur. "I have to dress around my body instead of dressing the way I would like, there are certain things I can and cannot wear... It really has an impact on my self confidence and how I see myself."
Hurley also explained that the extra skin makes it difficult to shower and lead a normal life.
"Loose skin changes what should be a 15 minute shower into a 30 minute because it needs its own care and drying or else it causes infections and other problems," she wrote.
Hurley said that an abscess even landed her in the emergency room.
Hurley's viral post has been viewed more than 1 million times. Now, she hopes the interest will translate into monetary help.
She's created a GoFundMe to raise $20,000 for loose skin removal. While Hurley wrote that she'd like to lose the skin naturally, it's unlikely that will tighten without surgical intervention.
"I was raised to work hard for your own things and never beg or ask for help which is why I am so hesitant to set up this effort," she said on the crowdfunding page. "However, I have worked so hard to come to the point I am at now with my weight loss and would like to see myself get to the finish line."
So far, she's raised $460.
Ultimately though, Hurley hopes her weight loss teaches women an important lesson about confidence.
"I wouldn't change anything," she wrote on Imgur. "I would take yards and yards of loose skin over being the unhealthy and depressed person I was two years ago!"
