From frightening killer clowns to a cult leader to evil witches, the list of scary villains in the American Horror Story series is endless. This year, it's adding slasher to the roundup.

The ninth season premieres on September 18, and devoted fans are ready to tune in. Many are requesting that this be the scariest season yet, and from the looks of the latest teaser trailer, I'd say they're in for a fright.

Unfortunately, fan-favorite actors Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson won't be leading the seasons as they have in the past, but plenty of new actors have come on board to take their place.

The very first trailer provided a sneak peek at the masked killer.

Set to Billie Eilish's "Six Feet Under," an unidentified girl runs through the woods from a masked villain hidden in the shadows. The AHS Instagram account captioned the video simply "#AHS1984" to announce the upcoming season. The ominous and thrilling moment set the scene for what's to come in the summer camp–themed season.

Fans are ready for the fear and hope that this will be the scariest season yet.

"I really hope AHS 1984 is scary. I want full on jump scares, violence, screams! I can't wait for the HORROR," someone wrote on Twitter. The latest trailer for the upcoming ninth season looks truly frightening, with plenty of jump scares to come.

Some are begging the creators to have Sarah Paulson set as the season's knife-slashing killer, but that's highly unlikely, seeing as she announced she wouldn't be returning in a lead role.

"Can Sarah Paulson please be the main villain in “AHS:1984” ? #AHS1984," one fan wrote along with an edited image of the actor.

Variety revealed that at most the star would appear in a cameo, but would not be returning in the ninth season. Many fans were heartbroken at the news, as Paulson had appeared in every prior season in a lead role. Evan Peters has also decided to take his first break, too.

Ryan Murphy shared a video series of screen tests with the cast, including a masked shadowy figure that is the season's villain.

It's unclear which of the famous actors will take on the villainous slasher role this season. However, there are plenty of actors from previous seasons who could easily take on the part.

"To celebrate the first day of filming the NINTH Season of AMERICAN HORROR STORY, here's the official 1984 cast announcement along with some amazing 80s lewks. Enjoy!" Murphy captioned the video series on Instagram.

The masked villain unsheathes a knife and threatens a car full of teens in the teaser trailer.

The masked killer hides underneath a truck full of teens as they make their way to Camp Redwood. The murderer pulls out a giant knife and prepares to stab someone, most likely in a horrific and gruesome way — this is AHS, after all. In another scene, the knife-wielding villain erupts from the lake and gets ready to stab an unsuspecting girl tanning in a rowboat.

The season clearly drew inspiration from '80s slasher horror movies.

The nostalgic vibe of the season is already apparent in the few trailers and teasers that the cast and creators have posted. The scenes in this latest trailer look straight out of movies like Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street — both movies that came out in 1984, a nod to this season's title. One person on Twitter compared a scene from the trailer with a Friday the 13th one, "Friday the 13th (1980) vs. AHS: 1984 (2019)  #AHS1984."

Fans got the first real look at this season's villain, and it will likely be the most frightening one so far.

"Welcome to Camp Redwood. Good luck leaving alive. #AHS1984 premieres Sept. 18 on @FXNetworks," the series' Twitter account posted, along with the latest trailer. Some suspect that this season will be wholly terrifying but also have some comedic elements from the kitschy '80s films it's inspired by.
