Netflix new series "The Witcher"

Game of Thrones concluded months ago, and since then there has been an epic fantasy void in many fans' hearts that Netflix intends to fill.

Henry Cavill, whom most know as DC's Superman in Man of Steel, stars as the silver-haired lead, Geralt, in the upcoming series called The Witcher. The show is based on a Polish book series and worldwide video game franchise of the same name.

The streaming service released its first look at the movie's leads including Cavill, Anya Chalotra from the 2018 Netflix series Wanderlust, and newcomer 17-year-old Freya Allan. Fans can expect more information, or possibly even a trailer, to debut at the 2019 San Diego Comic Con on July 19.

The first look at the series shows extravagant costumes and weapons.

Some fans immediately noticed that Cavill's Geralt only carries one sword, whereas the video game version of the character notoriously has two. Some similarities include the character's platinum-blonde locks and the scar running down his face. The series is based in a fictional land called The Continent, comprised of five kingdoms. Demons run amok while fierce genetically mutated warriors called Witchers, like Cavill's character, hunt them down.

Anya Chalotra and Frey Allan play Geralt's allies, a sorceress and a mysterious young girl.

In the video game, Chalotra's character Yennefer is Geralt of Rivia's (Cavill) love interest. It's unclear so far how the plot will portray these two, or if their relationship will play out on screen. Similarly to her character in the books and games, Yennefer has bright lavender eyes.

People can't help but compare this upcoming fantasy series to the widely popular HBO one.

The similarity of this wolf to the Stark crest is striking, and some fans took note. A fan on Twitter questioned the look: "Ok the logo is not horrible but is Geralt a Stark now? Is winter coming?"

Cavill posted this look from the series, and captioned it, "Gwynbleidd," which means "The White Wolf" in the fictional language of the books. So the similarities are merely coincidental.

The third installment of the video game series is now available on the popular new console Nintendo Switch.

The fan-favorite video game is now available for gamers to take on the go with Nintendo Switch. But if playing the game isn't enough, the TV series will give fans an even deeper look into the universe. Some are wary of Netflix's takeover of the beloved franchise, but others are excited to see how the story translates to the streaming service.

Cavill shared a hilarious behind-the-scenes shot of him getting into costume.

Filming for season one wrapped earlier this year, and Cavill shared a look at his process getting in and out of his wig. "Season 1 of The Witcher has finally come to an end. And although I'm pulling a face here it has been an incredible journey! The cast and crew worked tirelessly throughout, everyone pitched in and brought their A game to set and I couldn't be more proud of you all," he wrote. He also thanked his team for the strenuous 3 a.m. wake-up times to transform him into the monster hunter.

If this photo is any proof, there's plenty of action to come.

Cavill showed off a gnarly scar that he obtained from shooting the first season. The action-packed video game alludes to the action to come in the TV series. "When you take work home with you," Cavill wrote on his Instagram post.

Geralt of Rivia is a typical medieval hero, and Cavill is the perfect person to play the role.

The series writer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich calls the lead, in a tweet, "stoic, circumspect, balanced and fierce." Those are qualities befitting a medieval hero, and something Cavill has proven he is capable of in his role as Superman.

The writer also recognized that the first look shows Geralt holding only one sword and hinted that there was more to come. Fans will have to get by with these images until July 19 at the San Diego Comic Con, when more information about the upcoming series is likely to be released.
