The Riverdale cast is shrinking for season five, and fans' hearts are breaking.

Skeet Ulrich and Marisol Nichols, who play two of the main parents on the show, have announced they won't be returning after the end of the current season. Fans are heartbroken as they have been core characters since season one, and the two depict some of the most interesting familial bonds in the series.

The big question on everyone's mind is how the show will deal with their characters' departure and what season five, which the show has already been renewed for, will look like without the two leads.

Two beloved Riverdale parents are leaving the show.

TV Line broke the news that two of the series' parents are leaving the show after season four. The fourth and current season will wrap in April, and season five has already been renewed. Skeet Ulrich, who plays FP Jones, and Marisol Nichols, who plays Hermione Lodge, will not be returning.

Nichols shared some love to her fans on Twitter.

In a statement to E! NewsNichols said, "I had an incredible time bringing Hermione Lodge to life and working with my amazing cast, who became family. We had so many wonderful times together during the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. We really do have the best fans ever. I am looking forward to the next chapter and am excited about the future."

There is more to come on the series and even more drama.

Now the show will have to figure out a way to write out these two leads, and everyone is curious about where the series will go. Ulrich said in his own statement to E! News, "I'm incredibly grateful for the friendships I've made on Riverdale, and I will miss seeing everyone on a daily basis. I'm proud to have been part of such a talented group of people, in front of the camera and behind. But I've decided that it's time for me to move on to explore other creative opportunities."

Jughead and FP Jones have a bond that really sets the show apart.

Riverdale's sheriff and dad of the year delivered a father-son relationship to the show after Luke Perry died before the fourth season started filming. Everyone loved the father-son relationship between Perry and KJ Apa's characters. Sprouse and Ulrich were able to depict that same kind of father-son bond onscreen as Jughead and FP Jones.

The chemistry between Amick and Ulrich needs a show of its own.

Fans are also sad to say goodbye to the romance between Mädchen Amick and Skeet Ulrich's characters. "Can someone get Mädchen & Skeet in a different project together? So much chemistry. So much potential. Imagine all that with good writing," one fan wrote on Twitter.

Maybe season five will be a jump into the future post-college.

One fan's theory for how the writers will handle the cut is a jump into the future. The Riverdale kids are in their senior year, so it could make sense to see how they are post-college. "It make sense especially if S5 do a 4/5 years time jump but I am sad," another fan tweeted.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement to E! News that he's grateful for their work and is sad to say goodbye.

"Part of life in Riverdale — and part of growing up — is saying goodbye to people. I'm grateful to Skeet and Marisol for their incredible work on the show these last four years, and we all wish them well on their future endeavors. F.P. and Hermione will never be far from our hearts. And, of course, they're always welcome back in Riverdale," Aguirre-Sacasa said.

Even though fans will have to say goodbye to these two parents, hopefully the core four will stay strong till the end.
