President Trump has made it clear that he wants to ruin the lives of everyone who is not a white, cis, straight, rich man, or a corporation. Every piece of legislation he has put forth has proposed to infringe upon the rights of countless Americans —sometimes even the rights of his misguided constituency.
And now, in a series of tweets sent out Wednesday morning, Trump declared that he will ban transgender people from serving in the military.
The tweets came in three parts:
"After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow...."
"... Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming..."
"... victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you."
If Trump gets what he wants, he will be undoing all of the hard work Obama did to introduce a policy that would allow LGBTQ people to openly serve in the army. According to CNN, this policy that Obama introduced was "initially approved" by the Defense Department, but was still under final review.
So Trump is literally intervening to infringe upon the rights of the transgender community.
Trump claims that this decision is because of the "medical cost" and the "disruption" that transgender people would "create." He is calling the existence of transgender people a "disruption." He is preventing transgender people from serving their country and from feeling like an integral part of their country. By doing so, he is blatantly telling the transgender community that they do not matter, and that they will not be recognized by Trump's America.
What should also be noted is that his reasoning is wrong. According to a 2016 Rand Corp. study commissioned by the Defense Department, letting transgender people serve in the army would have a "minimal impact" on military costs. This includes the cost of healthcare.
So, clearly, this attack is all about indoctrinating hatred within his constituency.
