While speaker of the House Paul Ryan was busy showing off his room of white #CapitolHill interns for an early #SpeakerSelfie Sunday, the interns of the Democratic National Convention Committee unintentionally showed Ryan what diversity really looks like.
In an Instagram post from his speaker account, Ryan posted a selfie with Capitol Hill interns with the caption, "I think this sets a record for the most number of #CapitolHill interns in a single selfie. #SpeakerSelfie."
While Ryan may have been jazzed at the number of interns he’s seen smiling in front of, the internet quickly pointed out just how white the intern pool appears to be.
Little did Ryan know, a photo of this year’s Democratic National Convention Committee interns along with several intern profiles posted to Medium that same day. And my, oh my, do these DNCC interns put the House of Representatives to shame.
You know that pic of the 99% white RNC interns that Paul Ryan sent out? Get a load of the 2016 DNC interns https://t.co/SyiL28V6VF— Colleen Mondor (@chasingray) July 18, 2016
"Flooding in from colleges and universities across the country, this year's class is equipped and eager to join the Convention team," the intern profile reads. "Representing their home states, interns joined the DNCC team from states including: Hawaii, Idaho, New York, and of course, Pennsylvania."
One intern of color, Victoria Pleasant from Flint, Michigan, wrote that being around the "very best staff and fellow interns" will help her further develop her charge for change. Another, Bradford Taylor from Princeton, New Jersey, said he chose the DNCC internship for the convention's "once in a lifetime opportunity."
So much for stealing the show, or winning over people of color, with that selfie, Ryan.
