Between hormonal changes and balancing a social life with school work, the teenage years can be brutal. I'm sure we all wish we could go back in time and tell our younger selves that everything is going to be OK.
"This Is Us" star Chrissy Metz recently wrote and recited a heartfelt letter to her teen self that brought her — and us — to tears.
Metz acknowledges that discovering your own self-worth is a lifelong journey...
("You might not understand this now," she writes, and might still not "when you're 36 and fulfilling your dreams.")
...but just because you're not thin or blonde or what-have-you doesn't make you less valuable.
Metz brings up "Amy," a cheerleader in school who Teen Chrissy is just as important as, "even if your hair isn’t the perfect natural shade of honey blonde or because your clothes aren’t from Guess or that your curves look VERY different from hers."
Metz tears up, and urges her younger self to stop making comparisons to others.
"We are all on our own journey," she writes, "and YOU are the driver."
And through bumps in the road and wrong turns and detours:
Metz's message is relatable to anyone, through any trying teenage experience. It's one of hope and triumph — one we can all aspire to give our own younger selves at some point.
Not a dry eye in the house.
